I’ve been cleaning out my mother’s (and father’s) house. It’s a fascinating 56-years-in-one house accumulation. She liked to collect things for potential craft projects. To my knowledge, she didn’t use much of her collection. This well-preserved cache left me speechless.

I am a Pacific Northwest native transplanted to the southeast for 36 years. In 2012, I returned to my childhood home and fell in love with this corner of the country again. I am a grandmother, a storywriter, a teacher, an attention payer, a hiker, and a back roads wanderer. Check out my website (and my memoir) at www.gretchenstaebler.com. Thank you for this. I am heartened to know there are other people who are passionate about the earth’s creatures. One memorable day I encountered a stranger who, like me, had a tiny warbler in his freezer, carefully preserved after an untimely death, I think we were both motivated by the amazing beauty and fragility of these tiny birds, sadness at the loss, and a desire to share the wonder with others.
