A friend from the east coast visited me this past week, her first time to the PNW. We packed in the Big Five, dimmed a bit by the wildfire haze.

I am a Pacific Northwest native transplanted to the southeast for 36 years. In 2012, I returned to my childhood home and fell in love with this corner of the country again. I am a grandmother, a storywriter, a teacher, an attention payer, a hiker, and a back roads wanderer. Check out my website (and my memoir) at www.gretchenstaebler.com.

I think you’ve found another mini-profession: hitting the *real* highlights of western Washington!

Well, the non-hiker tourist highlights anyway. We did pretty well! There was also Lake Quinault, but I didn’t have a good photo. Maybe I will add it though.

♡ Love this photo post ! It makes me wonder what my own Big 5 are … !?!

And not necessarily my big five either; it’s a good question. Just where I would take a visitor who has never been, and who can’t hike. It’s a pretty good list though!

It is a great “all-purpose” list ! Ideally, I’d have three: an “all-purpose” list like this, one for summer and one for winter. I may actually create those now. Thanks for the idea !

We were going to do Nisqually, but it rained that day, so we did Centralia. 🙂 Including the unveiling of the new founder’s statue in the park. And, of course, the Olympic Club. Small town at its best.
