I am a Pacific Northwest native transplanted to the southeast for 36 years. In 2012, I returned to my childhood home and fell in love with this corner of the country again. I am a grandmother, a storywriter, a teacher, an attention payer, a hiker, and a back roads wanderer. Check out my website (and my memoir) at www.gretchenstaebler.com.

Sort of a Julie Andrews moment!

Julie turned 84 yesterday! Heard it on NPR on the way to the mountain. “The hills are alive…”

Last May I received a phone call from Father Terry asking if I would step in to replace the director of The Sound of Music at Sacred Heart of Jesus K-8–it was to open in 1 week! I said “yes” and that begins a whole long story. It was a wonderful experience because I was totally supported by parents and a wonderful, talented staff. First I had ever heard of “littles” and been in a grade school post Columbine–talk about being on overload. I didn’t do much except simplify the sets and costumes–the singing teacher is an alum from Juilliard in opera and two young dancers also knew how to handle “littles” and choreograph them. One of the littlest of the littles drew a portrait of me that I will always hold dear.
