I am a Pacific Northwest native transplanted to the southeast for 36 years. In 2012, I returned to my childhood home and fell in love with this corner of the country again. I am a grandmother, a storywriter, a teacher, an attention payer, a hiker, and a back roads wanderer. Check out my website (and my memoir) at www.gretchenstaebler.com.

I’m not sure what I’m seeing – you installed a gas fireplace?

No, it’s a wood insert. I had to have a chimney liner. A chimney liner has to have something to connect to. Hence the insert. No more crackle, won’t be able to hear it behind the door. It will be heat efficient, I suppose. Sigh. It feels hulking at the moment. I guess I’ll get used to it. It might be too late in the season for its maiden run.

I feel like it fits the aesthetic beautifully. It will never be the same as before, but I like it! Isn’t is amazing how many things we grieve as we move through life? It still draws the attention with that beautiful brick work. Classic.

Yeah, it’s okay. I did the best I could. The folks at Olympia Fireplace & Spa, Chehalis office, were very helpful assisting me in finding the best available option.
