I am a Pacific Northwest native transplanted to the southeast for 36 years. In 2012, I returned to my childhood home and fell in love with this corner of the country again. I am a grandmother, a storywriter, a teacher, an attention payer, a hiker, and a back roads wanderer. Check out my website (and my memoir) at www.gretchenstaebler.com.

Gorgeous! I just heard about something called Prairie Appreciation Day. A once a year opening through the reserve. Great birding and flowers in bloom this Sat!
I have to say, it sounds horrible. People and food trucks?
The camas is beautiful. It’s been a few years, though, since the mounds were blanketed with it. Don’t know what’s going on. I wonder if the Scotch broom eradication affects it. 🤷🏼♀️
The “event” sounds awful, yes. But the bird walk is at 7:30 before it opens to the public. Black Hills Audubon is doing the bird walk and the thought of wildflowers and bluebirds is too tempting to miss. I’ll be gone before people and food trucks!
Excellent photos, Gretchen. So glad you highlight the all important blue camas. Might be nice to add a note about how native peoples in our area cultivated them for food. Ann

They are both first place! But the camas came first.
