In Memory

One of the world’s largest western red cedars, centuries old, split in half in a storm this month. I visited her on the Olympic Peninsula the last two summers, and many times in the past. An amazing gnarled crone, she stood 174 feet tall and measured 19.5 feet in diameter. She will become a mother log now, nourishing young trees and other plant life on the rainforest floor as she was once nourished by her ancestors. (Kalaloch, Olympic Peninsula. In 1980, my mother and her friend Chloe, after many years of walking weekly in the woods adjacent to my home, decided it was up to them to try to preserve the city property from being logged for income. My forester father told my mother she was a “damned environmentalist,” and that didn’t stop her. (Finally he joined the effort: a kind of “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” thing.) There are now 73 acres of forest land preserved in perpetuity. My mother’s and Chloe’s vision did that. Not waiting for someone else to do it did that. The Friends of Seminary Hill Natural Area received this award this month.

Fogmageddon

I was early to yoga and the gold and crimson trees on the far side of Capitol Lake, their color muted by the dense fog that has enveloped our world every morning and evening for more than a week, called to me and my camera. I stood in the light mist—not rain so much as liquid air—trying to capture the duck family cutting a swath through the lake with the capitol building, the top of the rotunda disappeared in the fog, beyond, when a young man walked by behind me:

“Beautiful day,” he said. Indeed.
